Jung used the term “shadow” for the parts of the self that a person hides, denies or represses, though they still strongly shape thoughts, emotions and behavior. This interactive, experiential training gives psychotherapists an introduction to the theory behind shadow work and how to do it in a therapeutic setting. Topics include the psychological roots of the shadow, how it shows up in clients’ lives, and its links to trauma, projection and relational patterns. Through discussion and guided reflection, participants learn ways to help clients safely explore and bring together the aspects of themselves they have disowned, which supports emotional balance, authenticity and greater self-awareness.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Describe the Jungian concept of the shadow and its relevance to clinical work.
- Identify at least three signs or patterns that may indicate the presence of shadow material in a client’s presentation.
- Explain how to implement at least two therapeutic interventions to help clients engage with and integrate aspects of their shadow in a safe and supportive manner.
