This advanced clinical workshop looks at how therapists hold space in ways that are attuned, safe and sustainable, for clients and for themselves. We examine how boundaries form in the room, shaped not only by what we say but by how we show up, regulate and relate. Drawing on somatic awareness, relational theory and embodied presence, we work on the real-time task of holding space when emotions run high, attachment patterns are triggered or power feels uneven. You leave with practical tools for meeting those moments with clarity and care, and with a renewed link to your own inner container as a healing presence.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to

  • Describe how embodied presence shapes the therapeutic relationship.
  • Name common (and subtle) boundary challenges that show up when emotions or attachment patterns are  activated.
  • Practice clinical strategies that support attuned presence and clear boundaries—even in moments of intensity. Reflect on how nervous system awareness, relational dynamics, and power show up in the space between therapist  and client.

Syllabus:

Introduction

Objective #1: Describe how embodied presence shapes the therapeutic relationship.

  • Define therapeutic presence through somatic, relational, and neurobiological lenses.
  • Explore how embodied awareness supports client safety and attunement.
  • Discuss strategies to stay grounded and connected during complex emotional material.

Objective #2: Name common (and subtle) boundary challenges that show up when emotions or attachment  patterns are activated.

  • Recognize patterns of over-identification, distancing, and countertransference.
  • Explore how past attachment experiences shape boundary expectations.
  • Discuss boundary challenges in both in-person and telehealth contexts.

Objective #3: Practice clinical strategies that support attuned presence and clear boundaries—even in  moments of intensity.

  • Introduce regulation techniques like grounding, breath, and pacing.
  • Practice boundary micro-movements such as naming, resourcing, and pausing.
  • Incorporate somatic and mindful tools from relational psychotherapy and IFS.

Objective #4: Reflect on how nervous system awareness, relational dynamics, and power show up in the  space between therapist and client.

  • Analyze therapist-client power dynamics with attention to equity and repair.
  • Apply nervous system models (e.g., polyvagal theory) to relational boundary work.
  • Use client feedback and self-reflection to support ethical, embodied practice.
