Intergenerational grief is the loss, trauma and unresolved mourning that pass through families, communities and cultural histories, and this workshop examines it. Participants look at how grief is shaped by personal experience and also by family stories, silence, rituals and wider events such as migration, displacement, discrimination or shared loss. You will learn practical ways to name inherited grief, understand its effects and engage in healthy remembering and the search for meaning.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Define intergenerational grief and explain how it differs from individual or acute grief.
- Identify common ways grief and loss are transmitted across families, cultures, and communities.
- Recognize personal, familial, or societal patterns that may reflect inherited grief.
- Explore culturally responsive and ethical approaches to honoring grief without retraumatization.
