To be most effective, we must recognize the importance of cultural diversity work in providing effective services to all families. This can be done with heightened awareness of barriers to providing culturally competent services which leads to awareness of personal cultural lenses. Come brainstorm strategies to overcome barriers to providing effective services to family members of diverse populations, identify ways programs can become more culturally competent, and develop a plan with specific steps to become more culturally competent. We will explore less apparent microaggressions to increase our support and understanding of our clients.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Grow self-awareness of and ability to describe various biases.
  • Help ourselves and others to mitigate biases.
  • Encourage diversity and acceptance of others.
  • Identify and alleviate microaggressions.

  • Types of bias across demographics and identities
  • Importance of multicultural competence in treatment outcomes

  • Knowledge of cultural norms, traditions, and experiences
  • Skills to adapt interventions for diverse populations

  • Defining bias and prejudice
  • Role of self-reflection and cultural humility
  • Recognizing the ADDRESSING framework in clinical practice

Objective #4: Cultural Resilience and Self-Validation

  • Identifying culturally-shaped strengths and positive ethnic identity
  • Impact of being unheard or misunderstood
  • Strengths-based perspective fostering resilience and coping skills

Objective #5: Recognizing and Addressing Unconscious Bias

  • Effects of unconscious bias in decision-making and opportunities
  • Role of names, appearance, and first impressions
  • Difference between conscious discrimination and unconscious actions

  • How stereotyping intensifies in solo status situations
  • Examples of microaggressions and their harmful impact
