Clients who are suicidal can get effective support from CBT. The course lays out the core tenets of the CBT model as they relate to suicidal thinking and behavior, and shows how cognitive distortions, emotional dysregulation and behavioral avoidance contribute to acute risk. Guided practice, case examples and lecture show participants how CBT’s framework, which is structured, collaborative and transparent, helps clinicians understand the drivers of suicidality and write individualized treatment plans that target them.
A further topic is the “suicide mode,” the set of cognitive, affective, physiological and behavioral patterns that switch on when risk is high, and how therapists can spot it. Participants learn at least five CBT-oriented methods: safety planning, behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, problem-solving training and distress-management skills. These methods help clients lower suicidal urges and strengthen their ability to cope.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Identify at least four core tenets of the CBT model and conceptualization of suicide.
- Describe key cognitive and behavioral factors that emerge during activation of the suicide mode.
- Explain at least five CBT oriented methods of providing suicide intervention to clients.
