This workshop explores intergenerational grief—the ways loss, trauma, and unresolved mourning can be carried across families, communities, and cultural histories. Participants will examine how grief is shaped not only by personal experiences, but also by inherited stories, silence, traditions, and systemic events such as migration, displacement, discrimination, or collective loss. Participants will learn practical tools for naming inherited grief, understanding its impact, and engaging in healthy remembrance and meaning-making.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to

  • Define intergenerational grief and explain how it differs from individual or acute grief.
  • Identify common ways grief and loss are transmitted across families, cultures, and communities.
  • Recognize personal, familial, or societal patterns that may reflect inherited grief.
  • Explore culturally responsive and ethical approaches to honoring grief without retraumatization.
