Choosing a supervision model can feel like navigating a maze of theories, frameworks, and philosophies—each promising growth and structure for supervisees. This interactive three-hour webinar invites clinical supervisors to move beyond “model confusion” toward intentional, informed, and flexible supervision practice. Participants will explore multiple supervision models, reflect on personal values and contextual factors, and develop a clear, practical roadmap for selecting and adapting a model that fits their professional identity and supervision setting. Beginner and experienced clinical supervisor across helping professions are welcomed to attend.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Describe the theoretical foundations and guiding assumptions of several prominent supervision models.
- Analyze how contextual, developmental, and relational factors influence the effectiveness of different models
- Apply a structured decision-making process to evaluate and select a supervision model aligned with personal supervision philosophy
- Design strategies to enhance supervisee engagement, learning, and professional growth within their chosen supervision model
- Develop a tangible action plan for ongoing model assessment, adaptation, and growth in supervision practice
Syllabus:
Introduction: Choosing the right supervision model is rarely a simple checkbox to tick. It is a strategic decision that shapes how professionals learn, how safely and effectively they practice, and how organizations balance accountability with growth. A good supervision model aligns with the goals of the supervisee, the needs of the clients or patients served, and the realities of the organization’s resources and culture. Because supervision is both an educational process and a governance mechanism, the best choice emerges from balancing learning needs with safety, quality, and ethical considerations. A practical approach to choosing a model involves a simple decision framework: define the learning and safety goals, map the available models to those goals, assess fit against key dimensions (scope, intensity, evidence base, and resource needs), pilot with built-in evaluation, and be prepared to adjust.
