Cancer treatment can affect the mental health of patients and family members enough that it becomes necessary to tell “normal” reactions to an abnormal situation from more serious mental health concerns. Participants deepen their knowledge of how depression and anxiety affect cancer patients, grow more confident discussing sensitive topics and learn steps for protecting their own well-being.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Identify risk factors and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety in cancer patients.
- Describe challenges for diagnosing and treating depression and/or anxiety in cancer patients.
- Distinguish common periods of crisis during the cancer experience and develop ways to effectively communicate.
- Express measures that help prevent compassion fatigue to remain healthy to continue providing services to patients and families.
