ACES, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, are traumatic events that occur before a person turns 18. They affect lifelong physical and mental health, the likelihood of later victimization or perpetration, and overall well-being. Centers for Disease Control data from 2020 show that 61% of adults surveyed in 25 states reported at least one adverse childhood experience. Creative techniques keep gaining ground in therapy, and using them to treat ACES can improve clients’ overall quality of life. This training looks more closely at ACES and at how creative techniques help clients face them.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Identify and define the major categories of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and explain their prevalence and impact on individuals across the lifespan.
- Analyze the relationship between ACEs, brain development, behavior, and long-term physical and mental health outcomes.
- Apply trauma-informed principles to recognize, respond to, and support individuals using practical and creative techniques to help the healing of ACES.
