Racial trauma takes a real toll on the mental health of Black men, and clinicians need the tools to respond. This training offers strategies for supporting Black men’s mental health and healing. Built on cultural humility and anti-racist practice, the course teaches evidence-based ways to recognize, respond to and heal racialized trauma in clinical settings. Participants look at where race, mental health and the social determinants of health meet, and come away with a clearer picture of the particular adversities Black men face.
The workshop uses real-life case studies to work through critical topics, including police brutality, racial profiling and “the talk,” as they arise in therapy. Participants learn how to build safe, inclusive and affirming spaces and how to apply practical clinical strategies that promote resilience and healing for Black men.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Describe the mental health impacts of racial trauma on Black men and their implications for clinical practice.
- Analyze the impact of police brutality, racial profiling, and systemic discrimination on the mental health of Black men.
- Identify signs and symptoms of racial trauma in Black male clients, enhancing clinical assessment and intervention strategies.
- Implement culturally responsive and anti-racist clinical techniques to establish trust and facilitate healing within the therapeutic relationship.
