DBT, short for Dialectical Behavior Therapy, is an evidence-based treatment that pairs cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness. It helps clients develop skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and mindfulness. The model began as a treatment for people with chronic difficulty regulating emotions and a pattern of self-destructive behavior, and it has since been adapted for many other populations and settings. This training gives clinicians a grounding in DBT’s theory, core components and practical applications. Participants learn how DBT is organized, from individual therapy and skills groups to phone coaching and consultation teams, and how to weave DBT-informed interventions into their own work.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Describe the theoretical foundations of DBT and its development as an evidence-based treatment.
- Identify the four core DBT skill modules and their primary therapeutic goals.
- Apply at least two DBT-informed techniques to support clients in improving emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
