Pacing problems in therapy usually come from several factors interacting. Therapists may hurry sessions without realizing it because of their own anxiety or inner pressure, while clients may push for quick progress to avoid painful emotions or pull away out of fear. Relational dynamics such as inauthenticity or unclear boundaries can also disturb the natural flow, and structural matters like session length, frequency and insurance limits affect pacing too. The course works through four domains, sensitive topics, therapist and client inner “parts” (thanks, IFS!), relational dynamics and structure, to help practitioners find and fix pacing concerns. Discussion and practical teaching show participants how to tell when pacing feels off, understand inner dynamics, use reflective listening and compassionate curiosity and set time boundaries. Addressing the roots of pacing problems makes practice more effective and more empathic.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Identify factors contributing to pacing challenges in therapeutic sessions.
- Apply pacing strategies to support balanced therapeutic progress.
- Describe the impact of therapist and client internal dynamics on the pacing of therapeutic work.
