Grief is something everyone goes through, but how people mourn, heal and find meaning differs greatly across cultures and spiritual traditions. This foundational, interactive workshop looks at rituals, symbols, ceremonies and spiritual beliefs about death and loss from around the globe. Guided conversation, case examples and personal reflection deepen understanding of how culture and religion shape grieving. Empathy, respect and cultural humility are emphasized, so attendees can better support people and communities in loss while honoring their values and traditions.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Identify key grief rituals, mourning customs, and healing practices from a variety of cultural and spiritual traditions around the world.
- Examine how beliefs about death, the afterlife, and spiritual meaning influence grief responses and support systems within different communities.
- Develop cultural sensitivity and respectful engagement when supporting individuals or families grieving within traditions different from one’s own.
- Reflect on personal and professional approaches to grief, integrating insights from global practices to foster more compassionate, inclusive care.
