This course is the second in a series of six, designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge to become competent supervisors. Part two delves into the intricate aspects of clinical supervision, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved. Through a combination of theoretical exploration and practical application, participants will gain the skills necessary to navigate the multifaceted responsibilities of a clinical supervisor. Participants will engage in drafting an Individual Development Plan, review a quality supervisory agreement, and gain knowledge and skill in the supervisory documentation process.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to
- Define the complexities of Clinical Supervision.
- Identify core concepts surrounding boundaries – Dual relationships, counseling vs. supervision.
- Practice implementation of the Supervisory Agreement.
- Create an Individual Development Plan.
- Review appropriate documentation for the supervisory process and sessions.
Syllabus:
Introduction
Objective #1: Define the complexities of clinical supervision.
- Discuss the profound impact that clinical supervision has on therapist’s careers, specifically the development of clinical competence and ethical practice.
- Define what the supervisee takes away from the supervisory relationship.
- Describe what a supervision session looks like through the lens of the supervisee/supervisor responsibilities.
Objective #2: Identify core concepts surrounding boundaries – Dual relationships, counseling vs. supervision.
- Define multiple/dual relationships.
- Identify key points in ethical codes regarding multiple/dual relationships.
- Review the seven deadly boundary crossings.
Objective #3: Practice implementation of the supervisory contract
- Identify compelling reason to implement the supervisory contract with supervisees.
- Define the elements of the supervisory contract.
- Discuss the procedural aspects of the supervisory contract.
Objective #4: Create an individual development plan.
- Discuss the “why” of using a supervisee assessment.
- Identify potential stumbling blocks identified through the supervisee assessment.
- Review and discuss the Individual Development Plan for Clinical Supervision and how it reflects intentionality in the supervisory experience and professional growth.
Objective #5: Review appropriate documentation for the supervisory experience.
- Review a sample supervisory session note.
- Discuss the legal and ethical requirements to evaluate and document supervisee performance and professional growth.
- Identify key point to not include in a supervisory session note.
