In this training, we will focus on perinatal mood concerns in women. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, anxiety, and other perinatal mood concerns. We will discuss the importance of delegating tasks, utilizing support systems, and practicing self-care.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- List the types of pregnancy and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders.
- Name 3 evidence-based models used to treat perinatal mood disorders.
- List validated screening tools for PMDs.
- Identify resources for community and systems development for perinatal mental health systems.
Syllabus:
Introduction to Maternal Mental Health (MMH)
- Definitions of key terms: perinatal, antenatal, postpartum, PMADs
- Importance of maternal mental health for mother, child, and family outcomes
- Distinguishing between “baby blues” and PMADs
- Statistics on prevalence and treatment gaps in maternal mental health
Objective #1: Understanding Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)
- Overview of disorders: PPD, PPA, OCD, PTSD, psychosis
- Signs, symptoms, and behavioral manifestations for each condition
- Differences in onset, severity, and impact on functioning
- Consequences of untreated MMH conditions for mother and child
Objective #2: Disparities in MMH for Women of Color
- Unique stressors and barriers for minority women
- Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and their impact
- The Superwoman Schema and weathering hypothesis
- Racism, discrimination, and family policing as chronic stressors
Objective #3: Birth Trauma and PTSD in Minority Women
- Definitions and personal experience of trauma during childbirth
- Physical, psychological, and interpersonal causes of trauma
- Obstetric violence, disrespect, and loss of autonomy

- Validated screening tools: EPDS, PHQ-9, PASS, JHP, PSS

- Signs of postpartum psychosis and its distinction from other PMADs
- Factors contributing to psychosis: family history, bipolar disorder

- Strategies to remove barriers to care for minority women
- Community-based support and culturally competent programming
- Advocacy for the Black Maternal Health Momnibus and other policy reforms
