We will examine interventions that effectively integrate culturally competent practice with traditional social work practice to explore issues commonly faced by patients living with HIV/AIDS in a cultural context.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the biological basics of HIV/AIDS, including transmission, progression, and treatment options.
- Identify medical, therapeutic, and community-based interventions relevant to HIV prevention and care.
- Discuss the impact of cultural values, stigma, and health disparities on HIV outcomes in the Latinx community.
- Demonstrate the application of cultural competence and cultural humility in working with Latinx clients.
- Apply the BE SAFE Model as a framework for ethical, culturally informed healthcare delivery.
Syllabus:
Objective #1: HIV/AIDS Fundamentals
- Definition and stages of HIV: acute infection, clinical latency, and AIDS
- Understanding viral load and transmission risks
- Overview of HBV and HCV co-infections
- Introduction to HIV superinfection and STI risk factors
Objective #2: Medical and Therapeutic Interventions
- Pre-exposure (PrEP), exposure, and post-exposure (PEP) protocols
- Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and medication classes (e.g., NRTIs)
- Importance of client education, harm reduction, and suicide risk assessment
- Community and professional resource links
Objective #3: Cultural Competency in Latinx HIV Care
- Definitions of culture, cultural competence, and cultural humility
- Latinx population diversity: ethnicity, language, immigration experiences
- Terminology sensitivity and respectful client identification
- Avoiding stereotypes through individualized cultural assessments
Objective #4: Barriers to Care in Latinx Communities
- Language and literacy barriers in medical access and communication
- Gender norms, stigma, and fear of disclosure in family systems
- Economic and legal challenges (e.g., undocumented status)
- Confidentiality concerns and fears of discrimination

- Use of formal address and respectful titles (Señor/Señora, Usted)
- Culturally sensitive interviewing techniques
- Tailoring communication based on verbal and non-verbal Latinx norms
